The Quran calls them the best names: “To Allah belong the best names, so invoke Him by them” (Al-A‘raf 7:180). Each name is a doorway into the same reality — one God, described through mercy, power, knowledge and care.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that Allah has ninety-nine names, and whoever preserves them will enter Paradise. To preserve them is more than to recite a list: it is to learn what they mean, to call on Allah by them, and to let them shape how you live.

Questions

Understanding the names

Where the list comes from, why it matters and how to use it well.

What are the 99 names of Allah?

They are the names and attributes of Allah narrated together in the well-known hadith: “Allah has ninety-nine names, one hundred less one; whoever preserves them will enter Paradise.” They describe who Allah is — from Ar-Rahman, the Most Gracious, to Al-Wadud, the Most Loving.

Why do some lists of the 99 names differ?

The hadith gives the number 99 but the most famous list is one narration of the names. Scholars have transmitted slightly different lists, and some narrations mention names beyond it. This page follows the widely used list of 99, with a short explanation of each.

Can I use the names of Allah for dhikr?

The Quran says, “To Allah belong the best names, so invoke Him by them” (7:180). You can call on Allah by any of these names in supplication. For counted dhikr, the phrases taught in the Sunnah — SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah and Allahu Akbar — are the clearest place to start.

Are the English meanings exact translations?

They are close renderings, not full translations. Each Arabic name carries a wider meaning than a single English word can hold, and the short description beside it is a guide rather than a complete theological commentary.
