Questions
How the Hijri calendar works
Moon sighting, the Umm al-Qura calendar and adding dates to your phone.
Why do Islamic dates differ between countries?
The Hijri month begins with the sighting of the new crescent, which varies by location and weather. This calendar follows the Umm al-Qura calendar used in Saudi Arabia; a local sighting can move a date by one day.
How does the Hijri calendar work?
It is a lunar calendar of twelve months, each lasting 29 or 30 days. A Hijri year is about 354 days, roughly eleven days shorter than the Gregorian year, so Islamic dates move earlier each year.
Can I add these dates to my own calendar?
Yes. Download the whole year as an .ics file, or add a single event such as Ramadan or Eid. The file works with Apple Calendar, Google Calendar, Outlook and any app that supports the iCalendar format.
